Bushido Parry Question

I understand the mechanics behind parry/bushido and the parry chances. I have a question I'm not sure where/how to look for the answer. I can't tell the difference in-game.

Do lanterns, torches, or other items that are typically held in the shield hand counted as shields in the parry chance formulas?
 
Baseshield is likely what controls the formula for shield parry, since lanterns/torches/other items are only the shield layer, my guess isn't
