How do I keep up with new ServUO commits

I am really not sure if I am doing this right at all, but I wanna keep my servuo up to date with the latest bug and crash fixes, but I am not smart at all when it comes to GitHub. Its really discouraging as I have a pretty extensive background with computers. Can someone kind of give me the run down on what I need to do to keep it up to date? Im using sourcetree, I think this is the best?

So far I made a fork of the servuo master. Then I made my fork the master on my local pc. Then made a remote to the servuo master and pull from that. Is this the way to do it?

I use tortoise git, or tortoise SVN works too.

I keep copies of my shard and just merge all the commits every few weeks. If I get a merge error on a script, due to a few bits of custom code, I then go back and scrutinize that specific file.
