Do these need to be manually planted on the mainland?

Well, you'd need something like UO Fiddler to import the graphics. Then you'd need something like CentrED to decorate with them.
I mean, you COULD maybe just replace currently existing trees but that would affect all the maps.
Another alternative is import them and then create a number of bamboo objects that could be spawned in game.
