It is not a programming work, but purely editing the graphics of individual fonts. It is definitely not a HardCoded problem based on Clients. A good example is the Desktops from Nikosko from the old days. UO-Desktop You can edit the font however you like. Even unifonts can be edited quite easily. Except for unifont12. And yes, editing fonts will affect the other appearance in the game. You need to know what kind of font is used for what. Specifically, the one on the Statusbar is also used in paperdoll. You can also add missing fonts to the font files (font.mul and also unifont). This mainly concerns French, Czech, German and so on .... But be careful, the game is very old and used the unifont format. not UTF8. This means, for example, the letter Ř must be inserted over the crossed out O. Skyrim also worked similarly in the beginning, before Bethesda converted it to UTF format.
I'll just add some information. If you want to edit the font.mul file - then use UOFiddler. But if you want to edit unifont1-11.mul - UOFiddler won't help you. Yes, older versions had this option, but it wasn't perfect (sorry AsYlum). For this purpose, it's better to use an old program. In 2008, I found it on a Japanese website, translated it into English and Czech. And it still works great. I won't explain how unifonts, or fonts in general, work, it's sometimes complicated. With font.mul, it's a bitmap job. But with unifont, it's not that kind of work anymore. And that's why it'll be useful to use this program.
