The entire game is designed on a square, hence the 8 directions, 4 sides and 4 corners, though you do have up/down as well, so technically 10 directions! You would have to redesign the game on a Hexagon or Octagon to change mechanics like movement direction to allow 12 or 16 directions! Which basically is the jump from an isometric game to a Polygon game! which is triangles, millions and millions of triangles! We can also talk about voxels but we'll leave it at that for now!
