Not to mention ridiculous. I was playing WoW at the time and experienced this 1st hand, The Green shirt in this video is like.. This is a good example of how people would react in this situation.. No its not.. Behind the facade of the internet people do shit they normally wouldn't do, cuse they dont have to deal with the consequences of their actions.
it might be cool I love the idea actually but id do it like this... make it so the plague gets into your weapon and the only way to get rid of it is through wiping with oil cloth lol. Hitting a guy with the sword will infect him like poison only its a much slower acting and takes days to kick in fully getting stronger in damage the longer it progresses there would be no warning or sign except for tiny blips of health being lost and eventually getting stronger till you cant heal up. The plague would be found in swampy dungeons deep deep where there is a huge abundance of it. How ever the danger is so great because a potent infection is given each time a player is hit by the diseased monster. This is actually a rather cool idea! thanks for helping me have it.

A little anecdote from Unchained...
A while ago, I created a monster that would infect a player. Every few seconds, this player would infect the surrounding mobiles..
Since UO players are the way they are, the player recalled to Brit Bank.. where players chill and AFK.. it didn't take long before everyone was dead.

We use this on ultima adventures. I managed to infect 3 facets as i ran from zombies, zombie dragons, and zombie llamasSomething like this?
